Investor memo

Calyx

Raising $1M to build the AI-native workspace that replaces the dozen apps knowledge workers use today with one local-first environment where AI agents actually work.

Three things are happening at once

The unbundling. We're moving back to raw elements — markdown, HTML, small composable files. AI agents are extraordinarily good at working with simple files, and extraordinarily bad at working with proprietary databases. The file system is the new platform.

Coding agents are absurdly powerful. Claude Code, Codex, and their successors can build entire applications, write documents, manage projects. They happen to be called "coding" agents but they're general-purpose intelligence. Nobody has built the workspace around them.

The SaaS apocalypse. People are vibe-coding replacements for apps they pay $50/month for. They need a workspace for that — not a hack.

The gap

Limitation
Notion Database-first. No terminal. No real extensibility. Agents can't work with it the way they work with files.
Obsidian Just notes. No project management. No collaboration. No agents. A tool for enthusiasts.
Cursor Powerful IDE for developers — not a workspace for knowledge workers.
Calyx Local-first. Agent-native. Build anything. Everything as files.

What Calyx is

A fork of VS Code — full IDE, terminal, extension ecosystem — designed for everyone, not just developers. Local-first. Agent-agnostic. Background agents that run autonomously.

Build anything from a presentation to an entire application without leaving. Manage projects with kanban boards. Write documents. Connect to any service via API. The workspace adapts to you.

Business model

SaaS

Marketplace rev share

Per-seat pricing for teams. Plugin marketplace as the ecosystem grows. Users build and monetize mini-apps, creating network effects and switching costs.

Founder

10+ years in startups. Philosophy degree. Complexity science applied to strategy. Domain-obsessed — super early adopter of every workspace tool, consistently 2-3 years ahead of the mainstream.

2018
Wrote about externalising cognition with AI — years before GPT-3
2019
"Information Liquidity and the Rise of the 10X Knowledge Worker" — predicted AI-empowered knowledge workers
2023
Built prompt pipelines, persona libraries, instruction swapping — before they were standard features
2024
Multi-agent orchestration with Claude Code — used by governments and startups
2025
Vibe-coded the entire product. The medium is the message.

The ask

$1M pre-seed to hire a co-founding CTO, accelerate development, and launch with controlled access. The product works. The thesis is right. Now it's about building the team and hitting the market with momentum.
